1936 - 1995
CHAPTER TWO
JB White, 1936
In 1936, the property was subdivided and JB White purchased the house on its present lot. The remaining land was used to build many of the homes in Beulah gardens and in the surrounding streets. White demolished the North Wing, several rear outbuildings and the front and side first verandah floor to create the present single story verandah.
Dr Clifford and Edith Craig , 1939
In 1939, White sold Beulah to Dr Clifford and Edith Craig who were custodians of Beulah House for more than 50 years in the mid 1990s. Clifford was a surgeon, radiologist, medical researcher, author, and collector of early furntiure, books and documents, he amassed large and outstanding collections, the auctions of which were memorable events.
Clifford published many medical journals and books on the history of Tasmania and Tasmanian furniture. Edith also published many books including ‘Early Houses of Northern Tasmania’ which featured Beulah House..
Clifford Craig was intimately involved in 1946 in the government purchasing Entally House, and in 1960 Edith Craig and Richard Green founded the National Trust in Tasmania, to allow purchase of Franklin House. The Craig’s were foremost in raising community awareness about the value and beauty of Tasmanian early houses.
